At the University Clinical Center Tuzla, World Thyroid Day was marked with a series of expert lectures. The event was organized by the Tuzla ENT School Association, the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery, the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, the Thyroid Disease Patients Association “Štit”, and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tuzla.
World Thyroid Day has been observed every year on May 25 since 2007 and plays an important role in raising awareness of thyroid diseases worldwide.
The aim of the event is to educate people about the importance of early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of thyroid disorders.
Hypothyroidism is one of the most common thyroid conditions and occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. This can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, depression, forgetfulness, irregular menstrual cycles, and weight gain. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too many hormones, which may cause irritability, nervousness, muscle weakness, unexplained weight loss, sleep disturbances, vision problems, and eye irritation.
According to Dr. Majda Mujić, Acting Head of the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery and President of the Tuzla ENT School Association, this year’s slogan is “The Power of Togetherness.”
“Today, through two expert lectures delivered by Associate Professor Belkisa Izić, MD, PhD, and Dr. Azra Ibrišević, we will discuss thyroid diseases, diagnostic procedures, and treatment options from the perspectives of our two clinics,” said Dr. Mujić.
Professor Svjetlana Mujagić, MD, PhD, Head of the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, emphasized that raising awareness among patients is only possible through teamwork.
“The Department of Nuclear Medicine within the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine is often the place where patients first come face to face with thyroid disease. What is especially important is the multidisciplinary cooperation between our two clinics, as well as a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment approach followed by continuous patient monitoring. We are particularly proud that the University Clinical Center Tuzla acquired new equipment over the past year, which will significantly improve the diagnosis of thyroid diseases,” said Professor Mujagić.
