In cooperation between the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery, UCC Tuzla, and the ENT School Tuzla Association, a workshop entitled “Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)” was successfully held on December 30, 2025, at the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery.

The guest lecturer and principal instructor was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faris Brkić, Specialist in Otorhinolaryngology from AKH Vienna, whose extensive clinical and academic experience made an outstanding contribution to the quality of the educational program. As part of the practical segment of the workshop, three functional endoscopic sinus surgery procedures were performed in collaboration with specialists from the Clinic, enabling direct intraoperative knowledge transfer and the application of modern surgical techniques.

In addition to the operative component, expert educational lectures were delivered by physicians from UCC Tuzla. These lectures covered contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, indications and contraindications for endoscopic sinus surgery, as well as postoperative patient follow-up.

It is particularly important to emphasize that the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery, UCC Tuzla, has been continuously performing FESS procedures for 23 years and was the first clinic in Bosnia and Herzegovina to introduce functional endoscopic sinus surgery. The FESS program at the Clinic began in May 2002, when Prof. Dr. Livije Kalogjera and Prof. Dr. Tomislav Baudoin from the ENT Clinic “Sestre milosrdnice” in Zagreb demonstrated rhinosinus FESS procedures, thereby officially initiating the implementation of this modern surgical technique in the clinical practice of the ENT Clinic at UCC Tuzla.

A further significant advancement in modern ENT surgery was achieved in September 2025, when the Clinic began performing FESS procedures with the assistance of a navigation system (NESS). This represents a major improvement in the precision, safety, and overall quality of surgical procedures, particularly in complex and revision cases.

This type of educational activity has exceptional professional and clinical value, as it enables:

  • direct transfer of knowledge and experience from renowned European centers,

  • enhancement of surgical skills through hands-on practice,

  • adoption of contemporary treatment standards in ENT practice, and

  • strengthening of professional cooperation and exchange of experience between domestic and international experts.

On this occasion, the Head of the Clinic, Dr. Sci. Majda Mujić, Specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, expressed her gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faris Brkić for his visit, generous knowledge sharing, and outstanding contribution to professional education, as well as to the Director of UCC Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, for his continuous support of the development of modern ENT surgery and physician education.

The workshop once again confirmed the importance of continuous medical education, long-standing tradition, and international cooperation in improving the quality of healthcare, patient safety, and the further development of modern otorhinolaryngological surgery in Bosnia and Herzegovina
