The University Clinical Center Tuzla serves as a teaching base of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tuzla, where students acquire practical knowledge and clinical experience under the mentorship of experienced experts.

In this context, UKC Tuzla marked the 45th anniversary of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tuzla, highlighting an important milestone in the development of medical science and clinical practice in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Over the past 45 years, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology has evolved from modest beginnings and work in limited conditions into a respected and modernly organized teaching unit, largely following the development of UKC Tuzla.

The Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Prof. Fuad Brkić, MD, PhD, emphasized that four and a half decades of work represent a period marked by challenges but also by continuous progress.

“Forty-five years is not a short period. We have gone through numerous difficulties, including the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the pandemic, and others. Despite everything, the staff of the Department and the Clinic have strived to respond to all challenges and demands, and to pass on as much knowledge and experience as possible to our students through our daily work. I believe that our students are satisfied with the level of knowledge we provide. We have published a large number of scientific papers, authored several books, and established excellent cooperation with related departments in the country and abroad.”

According to Prof. Brkić, otorhinolaryngological diagnostics in clinical practice is an exceptionally demanding and complex field of medicine. However, thanks to the acquisition of the latest medical technology over the past year, the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology has significantly improved the quality of its services.

He also noted that the management of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, led by Director Prof. Šekib Umihanić, MD, PhD, played an extremely important role in this process, investing maximum efforts to enhance the technical segment of operations and ensure strong support for daily clinical activities.

Prof. Brkić pointed out that diagnostics and therapy are now at a significantly higher level, which represents great professional satisfaction, primarily for the benefit of patients. Thanks to improved conditions and equipment, patients no longer need to seek treatment outside the institution, as modern, high-quality, and accessible healthcare is available within the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tuzla, Prof. Farid Ljuca, MD, PhD, emphasized that this anniversary comes in a year when the Faculty of Medicine marks half a century of existence, and that the contribution of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology has been exceptionally significant in the overall development of this higher education institution.

“This year, the Faculty of Medicine celebrates its 50th anniversary. During this period, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology has made a strong contribution through scientific research, the publication of high-quality scientific papers in journals indexed in leading global databases, and through the dedicated work of physicians who also serve as lecturers. Currently, teaching at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology is conducted by two full professors, one associate professor, and one assistant professor. In addition, several colleagues have completed their doctoral studies and will be elected to academic positions in the coming period.”

Prof. Ljuca stressed that the development of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology has made a significant contribution to the advancement of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tuzla, and he expressed gratitude for their dedicated scientific work, which has strengthened the Faculty’s image and reputation both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and internationally.

Thanks to the strong connection between the University Clinical Center Tuzla as a teaching base and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tuzla, conditions have been ensured for the continued development of modern medical practice and education, for the benefit of patients and future healthcare professionals.
