28th Tuzla ENT School: Innovations in Ear Surgery, Cochlear Implantation, and the Treatment of Dysphagia, Marking 70 Years of the ENT Service

On April 25–26, 2024, Tuzla hosted the 28th Tuzla ENT School, a significant professional meeting that had a special character this year, marking an impressive 70 years of the ENT service in Tuzla. The event was organized by the Association of Tracheotomized Persons of Tuzla, in cooperation with the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery, University Clinical Center Tuzla.

Surgery Day (April 25)

The first day of the School was dedicated to the practical presentation and learning of state-of-the-art surgical techniques. At the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Tayyar Kalcioglu from Istanbul, Turkey, conducted an educational session on ear surgery (tympanoplasty). Participants had the opportunity to observe and discuss the details of this complex procedure.

Lectures and Discussion Day (April 26)

The second day of the symposium was held at Hotel Mellain. Following the opening ceremony, chaired by Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, a series of lectures by eminent experts took place:

  • Prof. Dr. Mahmut Tayyar Kalcioglu (Istanbul, Turkey) presented “Cochlear Implants – Challenging Cases”, sharing his extensive experience in managing complex implant-related cases.

  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christoph Arnoldner, MBA (Vienna, Austria) spoke about recent advances in the treatment of inner ear schwannomas, vestibular schwannomas, and cochlear implantation.

  • Prof. Dr. Irena Hočevar Boltežar (Ljubljana, Slovenia) delivered a lecture entitled “Dysphagia After Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer”, highlighting an important aspect of patient rehabilitation.

  • Prof. Dr. Nenad Arsović (Belgrade, Serbia) presented “Clinical Characteristics of Congenital Cholesteatoma: 20 Years of Experience”, offering valuable insights into the diagnosis and treatment of this congenital condition.

“The meeting brought together experts from the region and beyond, providing a platform for knowledge exchange and the advancement of clinical practice. The 28th Tuzla ENT School once again confirmed its role as an educational leader, with special emphasis on the enduring legacy and future development of the ENT service in Tuzla.”
